Our Community

Built on Spectrum Tokyo, our own community brand, we host events of various sizes throughout the year where design practitioners meet and talk. Through sponsorship, companies can also leverage them for branding, recruiting, and PR.

Retreat

Set in Japan's regions, we offer multi-day programs for design practitioners from Japan and abroad. Through fieldwork, workshops, and dialogue — away from the everyday — we create encounters with like-minded peers and expand creators' perspectives and careers.

A 4-night, 5-day-plus design retreat that awakens the senses in regional Japan

Design needs the body again. As AI takes on more and more of the work inside the screen, we designers are drifting away from the very materials of our craft — real places, real people, real conversations. "Design Retreat in Ishikawa" is a five-day field retreat set in Kaga City, Ishikawa.

Who it's for

For International Practitioners

Design practitioners visiting Japan from abroad

For those who want to experience the culture and industries of regional Japan beyond Tokyo, learn hands-on from Japan's craftsmanship, and build deep networks with design practitioners from Japan and around the world.

For Domestic Practitioners

Design practitioners based in Japan

For those who want to step away from everyday projects to reflect on their career, have deep conversations with like-minded peers, and rethink how design connects with society.

What we can work on together

Ongoing touchpoints with a community build trust that a one-off exposure can't. We mainly work with companies on three themes.

Creating encounters with design talent

You rarely meet experienced designers, PMs, engineers, and other outstanding makers through a job posting. Instead, let them experience your culture and values firsthand, and deepen the hiring journey across multiple touchpoints. By the time a real opening comes around, the people you want already know your company — and the people inside it.

Growing your brand within the community

Not as a sponsor announcement, but as part of the community's conversation. Repeated touchpoints build genuine trust rather than one-time awareness. We believe the strongest branding is being welcomed into the community as a peer, not an outsider.

Nurturing internal connection and culture

The methods behind creating psychologically safe spaces work just as well for internal events and organizational development. Real connections across departments, and the felt sense of "being valued as a person," strengthen belonging and culture.

Why companies choose us

Access to a high-quality community of design practitioners

One of Japan's leading design communities, centered on mid-to-senior design practitioners — designers, PMs, directors, engineers, and more. Sponsors can reach this community directly.

Event design built around dialogue and experience

Not one-way seminars, but events designed around dialogue and exchange. Participant engagement is high, and meaningful touchpoints with sponsors arise naturally.

Bilingual (JP/EN) operations and a global network

Through Design Matters Tokyo and more, we have the know-how to invite overseas speakers and run bilingual operations — meeting the needs of global companies.

Let's build the space together.

Our community is made up of speakers, participants, sponsors, partners, contributors, and many others who take part in what we do.
